ABOUT AMY
Amy Sillman is a trained scientist (AB degree in biochemical sciences from Harvard University, PhD in immunology from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania) with 18 years of experience in basic and translational research in academia and pharma. Her areas of expertise include immunology, cell biology, signal transduction, and oncology biomarkers.
As an alumna of the first Research Science Institute (RSI) sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) in 1984, Amy has been involved with international STEM education programs and initiatives modeled after RSI via her work with CEE. In 2013, she was the Assistant Director at the Saudi Research Science Institute (SRSI) at the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This was the first co-educational program in the Kingdom for gifted STEM secondary school students. In 2015 and 2016, Amy created and directed the Saudi Aramco Research Science Initiative (SARSI) at the University of Dammam, the first summer science research program in the Kingdom specifically for gifted high school girls. From 2017-2019, Amy directed CEE’s flagship program, the prestigious Research Science Institute (RSI), where 85 high school students from the US and 15+ countries, between their 11th and 12th grade years, are selected to live at MIT for 6 weeks in the summer and do STEM research under the mentorship of professors and scientists at some of the top research institutions in the nation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Amy led the first-ever all-virtual Research Science Institute, a real challenge because the international student body was spread across 16 time zones! Currently, Amy has been tapped to lead the Adani Research Science Initiative India (Adani-RSI-India), to be held at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru in the summer of 2025. This program, which will be modeled after the RSI, will foster excellence in the future scientific and technological leaders of India.
Amy has received professional training in scientific writing from Mimi Zeiger at UCSF and editing at Phon Baillie’s Edit Republic, in the High-Level Proofreading Pro Course and The Art of Line Editing Course. She recently earned the Professional Certificate in Medical Writing from the University of California San Diego Division of Extended Studies, and is a proud member of the American Medical Writers Association.
